This thread is a continuation of a series of discussions held at the Learning with Games Conference, 2007 - session 4B. One important issue raised during the discussion was whether serious games should be used purely as learning aids or should they include some element of fun? If the user is not having fun, can they really learn? Can the user learn and have fun at the same time? Is having fun whilst using a serious game an added bonus?

I think the main purpose of serious games is to teach. What is the point of a serious game if the user isn’t learning? However, I also feel it is important to include some degree of entertainment to the game, so the user doesn’t get bored. This in essence will keep the user ‘interested’ in the game and encourage him/her to move onto the next phase/level.
